Brief introduction of the city
Aksu is located in the southern part of the Tianshan Mountain and at the verge of the northwest Tarim Basin. Aksu which means the white water in the Uighur language got its name because the Aksu River runs through it.
Aksu was a town and passage of great importance for the ancient Silk Road which section was called the Northern Way in the Han dynasty and the Mid Way in the later dynasties. It possesses a lot of scenic spots, including the peak, the desert and the river, namely the lofty Tumur Peak—the first peak in the world, the endless Takelamagan Desert and the Tarim River which is the longest inland river. Besides, there are high mountains reflecting the white peaks, the large plain with cows and sheep hiding in the grass, the Tarim River with beautiful setting sun, the visional Yardan landform in Yanshui valley, the Qianlei Spring with a history of more than thousand years, the summer resort Jiuyan Spring, the odd tree in Qi Spring, the Shemmu Garden on Tianshan Mountain with old trees and strange rare trees, the international hunting areas, Heiying Mountain and Tiger Mountain, the newly found cultural relic, the Mystic Grand Canyon of Tianshan Mountain and so on.
Aksu Area is not only equipped with enchanting natural scenery but also famous for its human scenic spots full of folk characteristics. The site of the ancient Guici Country, one of the thirty six states in Western Region, is located in the range of Kuche County and Kezier Thousand Buddhist Caves, one of the four famous grotto temples across China and first established in the period of West Jin and East Jin Dynasty and grotto temple cluster with Kumtura Grottoes as the representative are the production of the foreign culture combining with the traditional culture. Zhaohuli Great Temple, Beacon Tower of Han Dynasty, the Site of Ancient Smelting and Kuche Great Temple, the site of Islamism, and so on are among the famous sceneries. The long history and the refulgent culture have given rise to art forms like the ancient Guici music and dance specially owned by Aksu and it is honored with the title “the Hometown of Music and Dance”.
With a population of 2140000, it consists of 36 nationalities, 73% and 26% of which are respectively Uighur and Han nationalities. Embed with pleasant temperature and abundant grass and water, its husbandry is well developed, called the“land flowing with milk and honey.”
It governs Aksu city and eight counties including Kuche, Xinhe, Shaya, Baicheng, Wensu, Awat, Wushen and Kalpin.
Besides, 16 corps of the First Agricultural Construction Division in Xinjiang are distributed in this region.
