Mt. Si Kong, also named Si Kong Yuan, has an elevation of 1227 meters. The legend has it that during the later East Zhou Dynasty, Mr. Chunyu, the great Si Kong (a Chinese ancient official title), secluded here, whence comes the name of Mt. Si Kong.

At the end of West Han Dynasty, Mei Fu, a personage of Jiujiang, secluded in the mountain to make pill and cultivate himself according to Taoist doctrine. At the end of East Han Dynasty, Zuo Ci, the founder of Taoist Danding Sect, set up the Xuanmiao Temple in the mountain. In the third year (574) of the Jiande Period in North Zhou Dynasty, Zhouwu Emperor issued imperial edict to exterminate Buddhism. Then, Huike, the second founder of Buddhist Zhen, secluded in Mt. Si Kong with the cassock inherited from the Buddhist primogenitor and four volumes of “Lengjia Classics” in the eighth year (576) of Taijian Period in South Liang Dynasty, digging stone cave to cultivate himself according to Zhen doctrine, handing down his mantle to Sengcan, and localizing Indian Buddhism Zhen and making it major sect of Buddhism.

In the Tang Dynasty, with Li Bai’s escaping from the rebellion and temporary residence here, Mt. Si Kong reached its heyday in the history with endless stream of pilgrims.
