Hefei, lying between Yangtze River and Huaihe River and boarding on the Chao Lake, is the provincial capital as well as the center of politics, economy, culture, education, tourism and transportation of Anhui Province. With an overall area of 7,266 square kilometers and a population of 4,450,000, Hefei has a jurisdiction over Changfeng County, Feidong County, Feixi County and Yaohai Area, Luyang Area, Shushan Area, and Baohe Area, among which the urban areas cover 596 square kilometers and have a population of 1,550,000.
Hefei enjoys a long history of more than 2000 years and was established as a county in the Qin Dynasty. Hefei has been called "the gate to southern China and the throat to the Huaihe River" and "the first county of southern China and the major junction of Wu and Chu
Crowned as "Green City", Hefei features a distinctive garden style; dotted with the cities are various gardens. In 1992, Hefei was awarded as one of the first national "Garden Cities", and in 1999 it was honored as the "Excellent Tourism City in China". Hefei has beautiful natural scenery and numerous places of interests. The best time for visit is from April to October.
Hefei is one of the scientific and educational hubs in central China. The city has 30 universities such as University of Science and Technology of China, Anhui University, and Hefei University of Technology; and also more than 200 research organizations such as Hefei College of Chinese Academy of Sciences, etc., and nearly 200,000 science and technology staff.
