Huangmei Opera, Anqing

As the hometown of Chinese operas, Anhui still keeps Nuo Opera with the reputation of “the living opera fossil” and the ancient Mulian Opera. And, Hui Opera, which originates from Anhui, is one of the original bases of Beijing Opera. Its Huangmei Opera has become a big nationwide type of opera. The folk dance of Anhui is rich and colorful in variety, especially famous for Huagudeng, which is popular in the region aside Huaihe River and enjoys the reputation of “ballet in the east”. Huangmei Opera was originally a kind of folk tea-picking madrigal popular in the mountainous area on the Anhui-Hubei border. Then, through the opera films such as “Tianxianpei” and “Nv Fuma” etc acted by artists of Yan Fengying and Wang Shaofang, it produced a nation-wide influence in the 1950s and 1960s. And, in the 1098s and 1990s, recomposed by the new generation of artists and widely shown in occident and southeastern Asia, Huangmei Opera has become a big type of Chinese opera popular at home and abroad.
