Tongling Gorge
Lying in the south of the Grand Canyon, Tongling Gorge is a closed rectangle gorge, 1,000 meters in length, 200 meters in width and 300 meters in depth. It shapes like a slot in the earth, narrow and deep. In the gorge grow numerous trees from ancient times. On the steep cliff grow a number of whirling and graceful trees. The whole gorge is covered with green trees and decorated with flowing water, which refreshes visitors in the gorge. More than two thousand varieties of plants exist here, many of which are rare plants strictly protected by the nation. Plants that could be seen only in Jurassic (dating back 18 million years ago) and be living with dinosaurs, such as tree fern, Kwan-yin lotus fern, golden plum, Xian Timber and Blaze Trees, also exist in the gorge. According to geologists, this gorge used to be a vale. As a result of the geologic movement, the top of the vale fell, forming a huge louver, while the cliffs of the gorge remain curved like the vale. On the curved cliffs hang stalactites of various shapes. The path into the cliff lies and extends under the dried-up old trees, as if a green tunnel into the earth's core. Three hundred meters down the gorge is the ancient rock base, blocked by a cliff in the front. However, there is a hole to get through if one walks closer. Entering the hole, there is a spacious cave with 100 meters in height and 60 meters in width. Deep water flows at the bottom of the cave and one can see a gleam of the sky through the top of the cave. The walls and ceilings of the cave are covered with stalactites of different shapes. Going down the bottom of the cave by Z-shape scaling ladder, one can reach the outside of the cave which is a virgin forest.
Tongling Huge Waterfalls
The waterfall, standing 168 meters tall and 30 meters wide, is the tallest waterfall ever found in southwest China. The waterfall hangs over the mountains and falls straight down like a huge piece of white silk, emitting thunder-like sound. The waterfall produces millions of water drops which seem to cover the sky with fog. When the sun shines over the fog, beautiful rainbows appear. To the left of the waterfall are the ancient suspended burial places. The waterfall falls into a 50-meter-wide deep pool, which is the source of streams in the gorge and underground rivers in the cave. These streams and rivers again form a huge underground river leading to a new waterfall. Four huge caves are at the entrance of the underground river. The caves are deep and curved. If visitors climb 30 meters up the scaling ladder along the cliff, they will discover an underground river flowing, falling down along the cliff, and forming different levels of smaller but clear waterfalls. On the top of the first-level waterfall there are huge and various-shaped stalactites. The landscape made of calcareous rock is especially marvelous.
