A picturesque mountain village, 3 hours' drive from Beijing through winding mountain valleys. The ancient walled courtyard houses and alleys clamber up the hillside, and have remained largely unchanged for centuries. Many of the families (all descended from the original founder) open their homes to provide meals for visitors.

It seems that Time never came to Chuandixia. Not since the 60s at least. In this small village from Ming Dynasty you still can find slogans for Chairman Mao written on the walls. It is not easy to get to the village, so when I went there we chartered a cab for the day (the driver did not know where the village was which took some explanation). The road goes through the desolate Beijing mountains, and in the village you can get a very accurate picture of what it was like to live this harsh environment. I takes a bit over two hours to get there, and the same back to Beijing, and it is definitely worth it.
