Mutianyu Great Wall is located in Huairou County 70 kilometers northeast of Beijing. The Mutianyu section of the Great Wall is connected with Juyongguan Pass in the west and Gubeikou Gateway in the east. As one of the best-preserved parts of the Great Wall, Mutianyu used to serve as the northern barrier defending the capital and the imperial tombs

This 2,250 meters long portion of the Great Wall has 22 watch towers, with the highest having an altitude of about 540 meters. Visitors can climb the wall by taking the ancient road to the Mutianyu Pass. The cable car is available to help visitors, but this modern cable car is also the center of criticism, because it damages the natural and historical landscape of the Great Wall. Two kilometers from the Mutianyu Village is the Gateway of the Mutianyu Pass, which is made up of three special hollow watchtowers: one big tower in the center and two smaller one on the sides. Standing on the same terrace, the three watchtowers are connected to each other and form a rarely seen structure among all the other sections of the Great Wall.

Mutianyu is part of the Jundu Mountain and is surrounded by woodland and streams and the forest is over 70 percent. The Mutianyu Great Wall has the largest construction scale and best quality among all sections of Great Wall.

1) Take Bus No. 916 at the Dongzhimen Long Bus Station to Huairou and then rent a taxi to reach the Great Wall Cost for the taxi should be about 25 Yuan. 2) Take Bus No. 6 (from April to October only) at Xuanwumen, Qianmen and Dongsishitiao 3) Take a tourist train at the Xizhimen Railway station.

1. Cable car: 55 Yuan /person, round trip, 40 Yuan /person one-way trip. On the top of the Great Wall, one can go down either by the cable car or by the chute.
2. Food and beverage: the red trout farm offers a great red trout banquet at the southern foot of the Jiankou Mountain. Vendors sell local special products like walnut, chestnut, filbert, peach, apple, peach, straw berry, apricot and date among many others in the parking lot.
3. Best season: the scenic spot is equally enchanting in any of the four different seasons.
4. The mobile phone service in the area is rather poor. Avoid using mobile phone in thundering storm. No littering!
5. Other tourist attractions in the vicinity: the Pearl Spring, Dragon Pool Spring, Lotus Flower Spring, the Chinese Dream Stone City and the Animal Amusement park.

The Great Wall at Mutianyu takes a bit more time and effort to reach than Badaling, but in return it is less crowded and more relaxed. An easy way to get there is to lease a cab for the day (a few hundred yuan). But don’t expect a the pure untouched Wall, this place is still full of street vendors with the usual souvenirs. The top of the wall can be reached both by stairs and ropeway, and you can walk a long distance on both the remade parts and the old parts. The greatest advantage of Mutianyu Great Wall is still the slide on the way down (it only costs a few yuan and is hilarious), this is definitely something that the Qin Emperor lacked in his planning of the wall.

Mutianyu Great Wall features dense watching towers and strategic military importance. It is moderate in accessability, not so touristy as the Badaling nor so rometoness as Siamtai.
