Locust Tree Cave

Locust Tree Cave is endowed with distinctive natural scenery thanks to its unique geographical structure. It boasts of numerous caves, clear springs, green mountains, and cultural relics. Moreover, there are legends of “Two Monks exploring ancient Caves”, “Half Pagoda”, and “Little Monk feeding the Boa”, etc. The Lotus Tree Cave scenic spot is a combination of mountains, waters, trees, caves, temples and pagodas, presenting a fantastic tourist spot for recreation.

Mountains: mountains in the scenic spot enjoy a favorable, geographical location and rich natural resources. According to Daoism, there is five-element (wuxing) theory which refers to the mutual resonance among the five key elements in the world, namely, Jin (metal), Mu (wood), Shui (water), Huo (fire), and Tu (earth). In the scenic spot, Songling Mountain in the east is considered as the element Jin, Nanzhan Mountain in the south as the element Huo, Xishan Mountain in the west as the element Jin, Shuangshi Mountain in the north as the element Shui, and Lamatou Mountain in the middle as the element Tu; in Houdong Cave lies Wuxing Peak which cuddles the Wuxing Mount.

Waters: there is a spring called “The First Spring of Liaoxi” and it is also reputed as “The Sacred Spring of Immortal Dragon”. The spring lies on the middle mountainside with an altitude of over 300 meters. The water source of the spring is under-ground water which can maintain an average water flow of 480 tons in the dries year, and an average temperature of 18℃.The spring water contains 13 categories of microelements.

Trees: in the scenic spot tourists can find a lot of ancient, herbage and ligneous plants which are the unique to Liaoxi. There are the ancient lotus tree and three pins of over 830 years old (tested by experts of forestry), more than 60 herbage plants, and 25 species of ligneous plants covering 55 genus and 128 families. The most precious tree species in the scenic spot include tea tree, clove, and Chinese honey locust. When lilacs are in full bloom, the scenic spot will be filled with fragrance. In autumn, maple leaves will decorate the whole mountains presenting a scene a fairyland.

Caves: there are numerous stone caves and each cave has Buddhist statues. Seven large caves and three Tongtian Caves (means deep and grand caves) can be found here. Tongtian Caves are quite spectacular and they come into being in ancient times. The deepest Tongtian Cave boasts of a length of 27 meters.       

The Locust Tree Cave is well known for its combined beauty of sceneries in South China and North China.

Tips: The best time for touring the Locust Tree Cave is from April to October. It is a combination of mountains, waters, trees, caves, temples and pagodas, presenting a fantastic tourist spot for recreation. Winter here is very cold with big wind and sand-storms.
