Eastern Airlines, also known as China Eastern Airlines, is a major Chinese airline based in Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport. It operates domestic, regional, and international routes, in line with its company slogan “Traveling the globe, making dreams come true.”
The airline was established way back in 1988 under the CAAC Huadong Administration. In 1997, it became the first airline in China to offer shares internationally. In 1988, China Eastern founded China Cargo Airlines together with COSCO. In March of 2001, the airline took over Great Wall Airlines. In 2003, it also merged with China Yunnan Airlines and China Northwest Airlines. In 2009, it merged with Shanghai Airlines, which eased the stiff competition between the two carriers, both of which are based in Shanghai. This helped consolidate the city’s status as an international aviation hub. Following the merger, however, Shanghai Airlines retained its brand and its livery, and simply became a subsidiary of China Eastern.
The carrier also recently announced that it was planning to enter into a strategic alliance with the Qantas Group to form Jetstar Hong Kong. This is planned to be a low-cost airline based in Hong Kong International Airport. It is expected to begin operating in 2013.
The government of China has an ownership stake in China Eastern Airlines amounting to 61.64% of total shares.

China Eastern Airlines is highly reputable and well established in Asia, Australia, and North America. They also have European flights to London and Stockholm. However, its main objective is to fully maximize the potential of the domestic market, and it has begun doing so by boosting the frequency of flights going from Shanghai to other cities within China.
At the same time, China Eastern is also expanding its international operations. Thus, it is planning to launch a service going to Rome and to open more routes to the US, Europe, and Australia.
Its main flights include:

China Eastern’s longest non-stop route is from Shanghai to New York, which began in 2007. Currently, it is also seeking approval for flights that will service the Shanghai-Hawaii route.
China Eastern’s logo is a white artistic rendition of a swallow with a circular background consisting of a red semi-circle that resembles a sun and another semi-circle in dark blue, resembling the seas. The swallow’s tail is a transfiguration of CE, which stands for China Eastern.
China Eastern does not have a Premium Economy Class.
In 2010, China Eastern initially announced that it was going to be part of SkyTeam. In 2011, the agreement was finalized and China Eastern became an official member of the SkyTeam airline alliance, along with its subsidiary Shanghai Airlines. It became the 14th member of the SkyTeam and the second Chinese carrier in the alliance, the other being China Southern Airlines.
The SkyTeam is the second largest airline alliance, with all 15 member airlines flying to up to 926 destinations in 173 different countries. With this, passengers can enjoy connecting flights without a problem as well as Minimum Connect Times and flexible ticket transfers between different members of the alliance.
This means that China Eastern Airlines can enjoy privileges from other SkyTeam members including:
Aeroflot, Air France, Delta Air Lines, Korean Air, Aeromexico, Alitalia, China Southern Airlines, Kenya Airways, TAROM, Air Europa, China Airlines, Czech Airlines, KLM
Aside from being a member of SkyTeam, China Eastern also has codeshare agreements with four other airlines that are not members of the SkyTeam. These airlines include:
Japan Airlines, member of OneWorld alliance, Mandarin Airlines, Qantas, member of OneWorld alliance, WestJet, All Nippon Airways, member of Star Alliance, Asiana Airlines, member of Star Alliance
China Eastern is a major customer for Airbus. In fact, it was the first Chinese airline to have ordered an Airbus fleet, which centers on the A320 series. This fleet is being used primarily for domestic flights. However, the carrier also recently acquired 15 Airbus A330. The airline also has a Boeing 737 Next Generation fleet.
The total fleet size of China Eastern is 302 +110 orders. The entire fleet flies to 110 destinations and consists of:
