hangzhou xiaoshan airport

The Hangzhou Xiaoshan International Airport is the main airport that serves Hangzhou city, a major city in China’s Yangtze River Delta region. It is also the capital of Zhejiang Province, China, thus making the Hangzhou airport quite important. Sure enough, in 2010, the airport handled 17,068,585 passengers. This made it the 9th busiest airport in China and the 8th busiest in terms of cargo traffic. It is also the 10th busiest Chinese airport in terms of traffic movements.

The airport, which was constructed back in July 1997 and was completed on December 30, 2000, replaced the old Hangzhou Jianqiao Airport, which used to be a dual-use airport serving both civil and military purposes. In March 2004, the new airport was declared as an international airport after immigration and customs facilities were built there.

Terminals and Airlines

The Hangzhou Xiaoshan airport is currently divided into Phase One and Phase Two, the latter of which is still being constructed. The Phase One consists of one runway and a passenger terminal that can handle up to 3,600 passengers per hour. In total, the airport can handle 8 million passengers and 110,000 tons of cargo per year. It is also capable of handling large aircraft including the Boeing 747-400. On the departure level of the current terminal, there are 36 ticket counters and 12 for international flights. The airport also has maintenance facilities that are certified to perform B-checks on all types of aircraft as well as C-checks on Boeing 737 and Boeing 757.

Expansion of the airport terminal as well as the addition of a second runway is still in the works as of 2012.

The Hangzhou Xiaoshan Airport is currently the hub for CNAC Zhejiang after it merged with Air China and inherited the Hangzhou hub. Aside from that, many major airlines in China have regular scheduled flights leaving the airport.

Distance

The airport is located along the southern shore of the Qiantang River. This is encompassed by the Xiaoshan District. At its location, the airport is about 27 km east of Hangzhou’s downtown area.

Transportation to/from the City and Neighboring Cities

Passengers traveling to and from the airport can easily move between the airport and downtown Hangzhou thanks to the well-developed transport system in the area. Even those traveling by car can move with ease via the Shanghai-Hangzhou-Ningbo Expressway, which has an exit at the airport. For those who do not have cars, their main options include:
