The largest panda breeding center in the world is China Giant Panda Protection and Research Center which is located in Wolong Natural Reserve (located in Wenchuan County, Sichuan Province) and was built in 1980. With convenient environment and temperate climate, Wolong is an ideal place for the panda's breeding. At present, the center has bred 144 young pandas, among which 123 pandas have survived. The population of the pandas in the center has increased to 142 from 10 in year 1991, and has taken up 60% of the total number of artificial propagated pandas in the world.

However, the breeding center in Wolong was badly damaged by Wenchuan (Sichuan Province in China) Earthquake in 2008, which made the center lose its function. Among the over 60 pandas, one was dead, one was wound and one was missing. So a new breeding center must be built quickly to provide these pandas a safe and convenient habitation.

The breeding center will be started to rebuild this year and the new center is expected to be completed within two years. Meanwhile, the construction of a center for pandas' disease control will be started this year as well. Based on stable geologic structure, suitable environment and living habits of pandas, the best selected site for the new breeding center is Huangcaoping area, which is about 10 kilometers away from the former site. The detailed plan for construction is now being discussed. Considering the gradually increasing number of pandas, the new breeding center will be larger than the former one, and safety is the priority.

All the pandas of the breeding center are in good condition so far, both physically and mentally. Most of the workers and pandas in the former center have been transferred into Bifengxia Valley Panda Breeding Center in Yaan County of Sichuan; some of the pandas are fostered in other places; 6 young pandas that are 1.5-year old are living in a temporary settlement besides the government of Wolong County and 8 keepers are taking care of them meticulously.
