With the launching ceremony of dragon boats in Xiafu Park of Yanqing, Beijing on May 8th, the activities related to the Dragon Boat Festival has started although it was still 20 days away from the festival. (Dragon Boat Festival is on the 5th day of the 5th lunar month.)

 

The first session Beijing Dragon Boat Cultural Festival will be formally held from May 28th to May 30th, during which period series of relevant activities will be organized in Guishui Park, Exhibition Center and other places of Yanqing County. These activities include the traditional Dragon-boat Race, Zongzi making ("Zongzi" is a typical food for Dragon Boat Festival), mugwort sticking (The mugwort is stuck in the doors or walls of the houses to ward off bad luck.) Branch sites for the festival will be established in Kangzhuang Village, Badaling Village and other villages of Yanqing County to display the folk custom of Dragon Boat Festival of the country.

 

The most notable feature of Beijing Dragon Boat Cultural Festival is the participation of people from many parts of the world. And the tourists can appreciate performances provided by excellent groups from Columbia and Sweden.

 

As an important traditional festival which has been called one of the"Six Main Folk Festivals"of China, Dragon Boat Festival originated from the activities in memory of Qu Yuan (a famous poet in Zhan'guo Period of Ancient China) and has a history of more than 2000 years. With the purpose of carrying forward Chinese traditional Dragon Boat Festival culture, Yanqing County has held Dragon Boat Festival for 3 times. Moreover, participating the Dragon Boat Culture Festival in Yanqing has gradually become a new choice for the Pekinese to spend Dragon Boat Festival.
