Send to friend Print CommentA new road passing by the Great Wall at Badaling, which aims to divert traffic and reduce further damage to the wall, is expected to be completed by this year's National Day, according to the Badaling Office.
There are currently three roads connecting Yanqing county and Beijing : the Badaling Expressway, the national expressway No.110, and the S216 expressway.
The new road is expected to replace part of the S216 expressway that passes by the two gates of the ancient Guancheng pass, Fan Xuexin, section chief of the Yanqing Culture and Heritage Commission, told the Global Times on Monday.
Guancheng is one of the most famous passes of the Great Wall. It was built during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) and renovated during the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911).
The passing cars have caused a serious pollution problem at the Great Wall, and also pose a safety threat for pedestrians.
Construction of the new road began in November 2006, and was expected to be completed in 2008, according to the official website of the quality supervision department of the Beijing Municipal Roadway Administration Bureau.
An official with the Yanqing branch of the road administration bureau, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said it had been intended to coincide with the 2008 Olympics.
But the construction was suspended in 2008 due to an apparent lack of explosives, used for the construction of the tunnel, the official said, adding that it is now expected to be finished in October this year.
The part of the S216 that passes by Guancheng will be closed and vehicles will have to use the new road, he said.
