The tidal bore of the Qiantang River has been celebrated as the fantastic wonder in the world since ancient times. The tidal bore of the Qiantang River, along with the Amazon River in South America and the Ganges River in South Asia, came to be known as the Top 3 tidal bore across the world.
Every year, during the Qiantang River Tidal Bore Festival, hundreds of thousands of visitors from home and abroad flood there and throng to watch the great wonder of tidal bore on the eighteenth day of the eighth lunar month. Furthermore, according to the hydrologic station, because of a good deal of rain and several heavy rainstorms, the tidal bore of the Qiantang River this year, which is said to be the most marvelous in the recent eight years, attract even more visitors, including tourists from Taiwan.
The first tidal bore appeared at 13:30 with the height of 1.2 meters on the seventeenth day of the eighth lunar month. It’s said that the tidal bore on the nineteenth day of the eighth lunar month will appear at 14:20. The tidal bore, which appeared at 13:30 on eighteenth day of the eighth lunar month with the height of 1.4 meters, is the highest one. The roar of its sprays can be heard within a circumference of 22 kilometers. This accounts for a Chinese description that “the roar of the tidal bore sounds like thousands of armies.” Tourists can enjoy the absolutely stimulative experience on the Beauty Dam which is the best place to watch the tidal bore.
