The Length of the Great Wall

Since 2007, an investigation of resources on the Great Wall of China has been made by State Administration of Cultural Heritage and State Bureau of Surveying and Mapping. On June 5th, 2012, after four years of investigation, with concerted efforts of over 4,000 technicians, it came to a conclusion that the accurate length of the Great Wall is 21,196.18 kilometers.

It confirmed that the Great Wall is distributed in 15 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities, including Beijing, Tianjin, Hebei Province, Shanxi Province, Inner Mongolia, Liaoning Province, Heilongjiang Province, Shandong Province, Henan Province, Shaanxi Province, Gansu Province, Qinghai Province, Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region and Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. In those areas, there are 43,721 Great Wall heritages, which contain the walls, natural barriers, trenches, single buildings and related facilities.
