My wife and I have now been living in Shenzhen for nearly a month. We moved here from Provo, Utah where we were working and attending Brigham Young University. My wife is 27 years old and I am 28 years old. We currently have no children. Over the past couple years we had been discussing the possibility of living abroad. Both of us have always been intersted in living in China. We had looked into teaching English in China a few years ago but for one reason or another it just never worked out. Then just a few months ago the thought crossed our minds again and we again looked into the possibility. We began contacting different recruiters as well as various schools directly regarding our interest. Initially we wanted to be able to live and work in China and at least break even financially. We were most interested in the cities of Beijing and Nanjing because of their rich Chinese history and culture. However, the locations and salaries offered by the schools in these cities was not ideal. We were offered a job to teach at an international school in Shenzhen that would pay us over 5 times the amount that the other schools had offered. Intially we were hesitant because from what we had read there was little to see or do in Shenzhen. However, the more we thought about it the more it made sense. We could make more money which would enable us to travel more freely after our contract. Additionally, we found that there are many things to do and see in and near Shenzhen. For example, this past weekend we spent in Hong Kong. We rode the Star Ferry, went to Vitoria Peak, and watched the light show in the evening. From where we live in Shenzhen, downtown Hong Kong is only about an hour and a half away, and it is all connected by subway. We look forward to returning to Hong Kong often and also plan on visiting Guangzhou and Guilin in the coming months. We have also been impressed with the city of Shenzhen. There is much to see, do, and explore here as well. So, if you are considering moving to or visiting Shenzhen, remember its prime location in relation to many other amazing parts of China. Happy Travels!!!
