I set of from my friends apartment around the corner from Jing'an Temple and decided to take a walk down to the temple and check out surrounding areas alone.  It was my first time in Shanghai and I had been there for two days but felt safe and confident that I would be just fine walking around.  I followed my friend's directions that he told me and found the temple after a short walk
