If you really want to get to see the real china you must go and visit the small villages. The people are so warm and welcoming and most have unique histories. I visited one such village in Guangxi Province it was on the edge of Puyi. You had to take a floating walking bridge across the river to get to it but and pay 1/2 a yuan for it.
