Chongqing Museum, the Historical Museum of the Chinese society, is located in Pipa Hill, in the centre of Chongqing City. It was a comprehensive museum established in 1951, first named as Southwest Museum, then had its name changed to the Chongqing Municipal Museum. The total display area of the exhibition hall is about 3,000 square meters.
The museum owns more than 100, 000 pieces of various kinds of cultural relics and precious books. In these cultural relics, the most important and valuable treasures are: more than 500 pieces of Sichuan Paleolithic, 1000 pieces of Sichuan and Chengdu cultural relics, 100 pieces of brick picture. Especially the most distinctive features are the famous paintings and calligraphy since Song dynasty.
The museum mainly focuses on the culture of Sichuan, the Three Gorges archaeology, Chongqing modern history, Capital culture, Chongqing's folk customs and heritage collection of the museum.
