Charm of the Sea Square
Charm of the Sea Square
Located at the northern gate of Haizhigun Park, Charm of the Sea Square serves as the entrance for Binhai coastal road. One side facing the sea and the other secured by mountain,
Haizhigun Square (as Charm of the Sea Square is also known) is one of Dalian’s eight most famous squares along with Peoples Square, Olympics Square, Zhongshan Square, Renmin Square, Xinghai Square, Tigers Square and Youhao Square.
Things to do
Built in 1999 (constructions stared in 1996) to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the foundation of Dalian City, Charm of the Sea Square occupies an area of 38,000 square meters. With 13,000 square meters of stone-paved floor and 12,000 square meters of greenery, the square is built in modern architecture, steel and granite being the leading materials. Its futuristic design earned it the Award of National Art Design Competition. 26 surrealistic sculptures divided in 9 groups are scattered in different parts of the square.
The most impressive, and thus most famous, among the sculptures is the one situated in the center of the square. Almost 20 meters high, it was built in 1999 as a commemoration to the 100th anniversary of the city’s establishment. Made out of stainless steel it includes five curved pipes, 21 seagulls and 50 balls of various sizes. The 21 seagulls represent the arrival of the 21st century and the 50 spheres celebrate the 50 years of People’s Republic of China’s existence. The sculpture is designed in such a way that the visitor will imagine the pipes to be waves with the seagulls dancing to their plashing, justifying the new name of the square (until 2005 Charm of the Sea Square was known as East China Sea Square).
Close to this sculpture, and still in the middle of the square, stands a 60 meter artificial waterfall. Water originates from Holy Axe Garden (or Totem Garden for some). Totem Garden takes its name for it holds several peculiar totem-like sculptures which represent the harmonious relationship between man and nature.
Among the rest of the sculptures the visitor can spot several that include the sea element in order to highlight the seaside location of the square: a three member family enjoying their vacation by the sea, two modern fishermen in their leisure time and nine teenagers and their teacher participating in a summer camp by the sea. A sculpture of a young mother tying up her son’s shoelace demonstrates maternal love and tenderness.
Charm of the Sea Square is a great place to take a break from sight-seeing in Dalian. A walk by the sea-side, some peaceful moments by the flowers, the calming sound of the waterfall, a stroll among the sculptures and a quick bite will get you standing on your feet in no time!
