Introduction

Tower Wrapped in the Tree had earlier been named the Iron City Stupa which had been built to commemorate a War. This Stupa is a very sold tower made from bricks. One of the most interesting highlights of the Tower Wrapped in the Tree is that it is covered and wrapped by roots and was thus given its current name. It is also a very important monument since it is the earliest stupa to be built by the local Dai people. Located in the city of Dehong in the Yunnan Province, this tower is often compared to the tree covered pagoda of Luxi City. The tower is 11.6 meters high and had been built during the Qing Dynasty. It is wrapped with a banyan tree that has grown from side this tower.

History

The Tower Wrapped in the Tree was built by the 15th native chieftain in order to commemorate their triumph in a war. It is also believed that God had sprinkled a seed into the tower. After almost 2 centuries, the seed grew miraculously into a very large banyan tree. This is how the Tower Wrapped in the Tree came into existence. The tower was earlier known as the Iron City Stupa since it was built to remember a war. It is a solid tower and is made with bricks. What makes is unique is the fact that the banyan tree grows within the tower and covers it with its roots.

The Unique Building

Tower Wrapped in the Tree is unique and miraculous. The body of the tower stands stately and looks very grand. The tower’s top is protected by a majestic Bodhi tree like an umbrella. Some of the thickset crown of the tree reaches up like arms. The trunk is bronze colored and it wraps tightly around the tower. Branches and leaves reach down and cover the tower’s foundation like a waterfall. The Tower and the tree embrace one another. It is considered to be a very marvelous spectacle since they both depend on one another for their existence. This monument has therefore become popular throughout Southeast Asia.

The Legend

According to a legend, a disciple once asked Sakyamuni about how he could express his true piety for Sakyamuni. After thinking for a few minutes, Sakyamuni spread his gown over the ground and put his bowl on it upside down. He then placed his wand on top of the bowl. The disciples were enlightened suddenly. The gown later became the tower’s square foundation, the bowl was the tower’s body while the tower’s top was the wand, creating the Tower Wrapped in the Tree.
