Deyang’s famous snack “Luojiang Bean Chicken” enjoys a high reputation among Sichuan foods. The founder of “Luojiang Bean Chicken” was Yuan Tongru, nicknamed Congda, who worshipped Buddha from his childhood. In the 17th year of the Republic of China era, he took the tonsure, became a Buddhist monk and studied under the Master Changling in Arhat Temple, Shefang County. Three years later, he returned to the secular life and made a living wandering from place to place. Occasionally, Yuan Tongru had a dinner in a small restaurant. Without a suitable dish for drinking, the host made a dish of thin sheets of dried bean curd for him. The dish inspired him very much. After doing many experiments, eventually, he made “Bean Chicken” which is more delicious than that of the small restaurant and made a living by it. Yuan Tongru summed up the techniques of making Bean Chicken by repeated experiments. In the 25th year of the Republic of China era, he sent the first batch of Bean Chicken to attend Buddhist food exhibition held in Chengdu. In the exhibition, Yuan Tongru held a patent on Bean Chicken and got a gold sign-board. From then on, Bean Chicken became well-known all over the world.
