Guanyin (also known as Kwan-yin or the Goddess of Mercy) Mountain, which has an altitude of 488 meters and occupies a strategic location, was considered a prominent military stronghold before 1949. In ancient times, many temples were built on the mountain. The number of temples proliferated towards the end of the Tang Dynasty (618-907), thrived in the Five Dynasties and Ten States period (907-960/979), declined in the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), and were mostly ruined in the late Qing Dynasty (1644-1912). As such, many of these old mountain temples are now hard to find today.
With a total area of 1,733 hectares, Guanyi Mountain Forest Park is noted as “a sacred land in the south.” These days it is a theme park and attraction site integrating ecological tourism with Buddhist culture. The park boasts the mountain’s primeval secondary forest, consistently fresh air, clear and crisp water, and all kinds of singing birds, exotic animals, and fragrant flowers.
In the central Guangdong Province, Dongguan’s largest and most centralized natural waterfalls can be found in Guanyi Mountain Forest Park. As Xianquan Waterfall pours down with a fall of 380 meters, it fills the air with a silvery mist and forms spectacular droplets resembling flying jades and pearls. In addition, the marvelous 36-Level Waterfall never fails to stun visitors as it plunges from the top of Pudu Stream.
The most fantastic site in the park is the Guanyin Basalt Statue sitting at the very top of Guanyi Mountain. The statue is 33 meters tall and weighs more than 3,000 tons. With exquisite carvings, an elegant style, a grand demeanor, and vivid image, it is a truly precious and artistic stone relic in the style of the thriving Tang Dynasty.
Furthermore, Guanyin Square is a bustling central area perfect for enjoying scenery. Covering nearly 10,000 square meters, the square provides visitors with a panoramic view of the area. Standing in the middle, one has a bird’s eye view of the vista of the town Zhangmutou, as well as resplendent night scenes of the cities Huizhou, Dongguan, and Shenzhen cities.
Other scenic spots and facilities in the park include Guanyin Temple, Pudu Stream, Child Giving Spring, Barbecue Field, Children’s Fairland, Music Fountain, and much more.
