Traveling by train in China is one of the cheapest ways to travel some of the long distances in China and is used widely by the local population. It is important to know what to expect if you decide to travel by train in China.

There are 4 classes on Chinese Trains:

Hard Seat – Hard Seat is used by a large percentage of the population as it is probably the cheapest way to travel in China. Sitting only carriages, they are usually crowded and often more tickets are sold than there are seat available so the competition for a seat can be fierce. You will not want to visit the toilet.

Soft Seat – Soft Seat is available on the inter-city lines and provides a better level of comfort. Soft Seat is quite comfortable inexpensive method of travel for a journey of a few hours. Don’t be concerned if people take your reserved seat, just find another.

Hard Sleeper – There are six narrow bunks to a compartment that has no door so there is no privacy. They are usually very noisy and with a squat toilet at each end of the carriage. The condition of the toilet will get progressively worse as the journey progresses. Food trolleys pass back and forth along the train so it is possible to eat quite cheaply. A blanket and small pillow are supplied with each bunk.

Soft Sleeper – There are four bunks in a compartment which has a door for privacy. Each bunk will have a blanket and pillow. Toilets are at the end of the carriage and may be a western toilet however they may not always be clean as they are used by people from other carriages. No toilet paper is provided in the bathrooms.

If you choose to travel by train, China Travel recommends booking a soft sleeper.

The restaurant carriage will be the 10th car. The choice of food will be limited and only Chinese Food will be available. Most local people buy food in advance or buy food from the vendors on board the trains.

English is generally not spoken by any of the staff on the trains or in the railway stations. Limited English signage is available in the railway stations. A separate waiting lounge is available in the railway stations for passengers traveling in the soft sleeper section. Preferential boarding is available for those passengers.

Baggage space is limited and must be storred in your compartment so it is wise to travel with small baggage rather than large suitcases. Most train stations have a considerable number of stairs to climb to reach the platforms. Bags have to be carried up and down these stairs. Most stairs have a steep ramp so that wheeled bags can be dragged up as you walk up the stairs.

Train travel in China has to be undertaken with the full knowledge that the system is designed for the local population who are familiar with the standard conditions. Trains between larger cities are always superior to those on lesser routes and will probably run close to schedule.

The system for rail reservations in China will only allow Travel Agencies to confirm bookings 2 days prior to departure of the train.

We provides a 98% success rate for obtaining tickets for reservations. We do however reserve the right to change your scheduled itinerary and mode of transport if required.

Yes, but you should ask the ticket officer to arrange you in the same cabine. Because they usually arrange yout berth by radom.

I think this is a very helpful article and the descriptions are accurate for each class. I guess I'd just like to say that if people are up for adventure then the hard sleeper carriages are great! You get to meet lots of people and see a bit more culture. I don't speak very much Chinese but I still enjoy having a go, I pull out my phrase book and the people in my carriage have a lot of fun trying to communicate with me ;)

Yeah! That's true that in the hard sleeper carriages we can meet more people and know much more. And that is the very meaning of traveling! It seems that you have been to many places of China. Why not continue to share them? They are interesting!!

I tried to book 2 train ticket to Datong from Beijing and it seems like the option is very limited. K1114/K1111 with 02:49-09:03, does this mean it departed Beijing at 2:49 am and arrive at Datong 9:03 am the next day? Amanda

I live in Wuhan and have found many different answers to the question of booking train tickets. When I was in Guangzhou last week it was crazy trying to buy a ticket at the station, they wouldn't let me purchase a ticket more than 5 days in advance even though all the tickets up til then were sold out ;P In most cities you can find ticket sellers, we have 2 within 10min of where I live so hopefully your hotel in Fuzhou can tell you where to find one or the hotel might be able to help you get the ticket. The ticket system used to be a bit silly, only letting you buy from where you are to another place but it is getting better and in most medium - large cities you can get tickets to n from other medium-large cities. Hope that's helpful

You can book it on this site 10 days in advance

fadri replied at 2011-8-21 21:02:00

Hi, the train tickets are usually sold four days before the train's departure date in most cities.

chinachicks replied at 2011-8-17 5:12:00

Hi, We already have to fly like 7 times during our month of vaccation, and the only reason why we are going to Guangzhou, is for the experience and pleasure off riding a night train to Sanya and wake up to the sight of beautiful China. Therefore we will do our very best to get a softsleeper ticket. So my question is: Is it possible to buy the ticket in Fuzhou 10 days in advance or is it only possible to purchase a ticket on the trainstation in Guangzhou?

joyce replied at 2011-8-15 3:18:00

Hi, as Chinees national holidays falls from Octber, there will be numerous Chinese people traveling during that period. Thus, it's quite difficult to get the train tickets before and after the national holiday period. Thus, we don't provide booking train ticketrs during that period. I advise you to travel by flight: http://www.chinatravel.com/china-flights/
