No matter when you walk on a city street or come to a country yard in China, you will probably see a few people (usually 3-5 people) gathering to a crowd, playing with some small plastic squares with Chinese characters and simple images on one side. Yes, they are playing Chinese Mahjong .

Playing Mahjong

Chinese Mahjong (Chinese: 麻將; pinyin: má jiàng) as a kind of leisure game in China has about 4000 years' history. Because it is easy to play and is interesting, Mahjong has become one of the most popular games both in youngsters and old people for pastime. It is said that Chairman Mao (Mao zedong, China's first president) also like playing Chinese Mahjong.

However more and more Chinese people play Mahjong as a gambling game, get addicted to this game and finally lose their family fortune.

But if you want to experience this ancient Chinese game, I suggest you pay a visit to Chengdu of Sichuan Province or Guangzhou of Guangdong Province (Canton). Because people in these areas are more interested in this game and they even created their local rules and features of playing Mahjong.

China Travel has related tours to Chengdu, and Guangzhou. Also we can help you customize a trip to these places.

If you want to know how to play Mahjong, we would like to recommend you to this reference site:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mahjong (It has more details of Mahjong's history and rules of playing Mahjong.
