By the end of the year 2001, the Mulam nationality in Guangxi has a total population of 168,000, which accounts for 98% that of Mulam nationality in the whole country and for 0.35% that of the whole autonomous region. The Mulam nationality takes a sixth place in terms of population among all nationalities of Guangxi.
The Mulam people mainly live in Mulam autonomous county of Luocheng in the north of Guangxi. The rest are scattered in Yishan (now Yizhou City), Liucheng, Rongshui, Xincheng, Liujiang, Hechi and Huangjiang, which are neighborhood to the autonomous county. The inhabitants of the Mulam nationality have picturesque sceneries and a pleasant climate. They are mainly engaged in agricultural production but they are very active in bazaar trade activities all through the ages.
Owing to the graceful environment of the inhabitants as well as the optimism and intelligence of Mulam people with a preference for exchange and bazaar trade, there is a saying goes like: "Siba of Luocheng is a lot of fun", which demonstrates the style and features of Mulam nationality inhabitants. The Mulam language belongs to the Zhuang-Dong language branch of the Han-Tibetan Language Family, and is very similar to the Maonan language and the Dong language. The Mulam nationality has no written-form language of its own. Since they have lived together with the sibling nationalities of the Han nationality and Zhuang nationality, etc, for a long time, many of them can speak the Han language and the Zhuang language besides the Mulam language.
