The founding of the PRC ends the history of thousands of years of Chinese women's oppression and enslavement by feudal society, and dismemberment and humiliation by foreign invaders. It effects fundamental emancipation for women in all aspects of political, economic, cultural, social and family life. Women enjoy equal rights and status with men.
Equal legal status
The Constitution of the PRC clearly stipulates, "Women enjoy equal rights with men in all spheres of political, economic, cultural and social, including family life."The state protects the rights and interests of women, applies the principle of equal pay for equal work for men and women alike and trains and selects cadres from among women.""Marriage, the family and mother and children are protected by the state." Violation of the freedom of marriage is prohibited. Maltreatment of old people, women and children is prohibited." According to the principles of the Constitution, New China has published more than ten basic laws, such as the Marriage Law, the Electoral Law, the Inheritance Law, the Civil Law, and the Criminal Law etc. Both more than 40 administrative regulations and rules published by The State Council and the departments under it and more than 80 local regulations worked out by local governments clearly stipulate clauses that safeguard women's rights and interests. No law in China contains clauses that discriminate against women.
Equal rights in economic and social activities
Chinese women enjoy the equal right to participate in social and economic activities with men and get equal income.
Equal educational opportunity
Since the founding of New China, Chinese women's educational level has been greatly improved. The rate of women illiterates constantly reduces. There are an increasing percentage of the women having had college education.
