China education is mainly divided into these stages as follows:

1. Preschool education

Children aged from 3 to 6 get educated in the kindergarten.

2.  Primary school education

Primary school education is set for the 7 to 12 years old children. Primary schools are usually set up by the local governments, some are running by enterprises or individuals.

3. Secondary school education

Secondary school education is offered to the early youth from 13 to 18. It is usually run by the local governments or departments. There are regular senior middle schools, vocational schools and many kinds of secondary specialized schools in the system of secondary school education. Regular middle school is divided into junior middle school and senior middle school, and they both last for 3 years. Some of the students graduate from the junior middle school get into senior middle school and some go to the vocational senior schools and secondary specialized schools. These schools last for 3 to 5 years.

4. Higher education

Higher education is divided into college (for professional training), regular college and post graduate. Higher education is carried on by colleges, universities and higher specialized schools in China. Institutions of higher learning should the tasks of teaching, researching and society services.

In China, government is the main part in the school running, and society take part in as well. In this stage, elementary education is mainly hold by the local government, while higher education is manly hold by the central and province government and society also take part in. As for the adult education, it mainly depend on the society power like trade, enterprises and institutions, and in the administration of governments.

Ministry of Education of China is the highest administrative institution of education in China. It charges of the carrying on of laws, regulations and strategies made by the state, making the concrete educational policies, guiding the developing of education, harmonizing the educational work, and deploying the educational reforming.

5. Adult education

Adult education includes various kinds of school education, literacy class education, and other forms education. The development of adult higher education is great. There were 871 institutions of higher learning up to 1999, and 800 universities or colleges in which the correspondence teaching and evening university teaching are offered. There have been 1.1577 million students in adult higher institutions and 888.200 graduated in 1999.

As for the educational funds, the main part is national appropriations. At present, the funds of central government administrated schools are solved by the central government. The funds of local government administrated schools are solved by the local government. As for the schools hold by towns, villages or enterprises, the funds are solved mainly by themselves, and local governments give certain appropriation. The schools hold by society and individuals solve their funds problem by the holder. Part-work and part-study system is advocated.
