Five Temples Grotto is named after the five caverns excavated on the cliff. It is situated in a nice valley of upper Danghe River, 20 kilometers northwest to Mongolian National Minority Autonomous County and 90 kilometers from Dunhuang.
Since it was built in Northern Zhou Dynasty, it has been in repair during the last 1000 years. Most of the statues in the grottos have been destroyed severely. The six grottoes were created respectively in Five Dynasties, Song Dynasty, Western Xia Dynasty, and Yuan Dynasty. Repaired continuously for 1000 years, the Buddhist statues and grottos reflect the developments of the Buddhist art intensively and the art system of Dunhuang Grotto is gradually formed.
Among these grottoes, the first one was built in the square-pillar-center style, and you can find many myth images such as the Maitreya, Bodhisattva, and Mandala from the surviving paintings. While in the second grotto, there are more statues of Bodhisattvas, kings and servants, which are carved vividly. These excellent artworks show to the world that Chinese people have achieved a fairly high level of art in early times.
