The activities in Jiayuguan are full of local and historical features, such as riding horses and camels. And among them, the most valuable thing is attending the imitating ceremony of going out for battle.
The ceremony, which is held officially, is celebrated at the foot of the gate of impregnable Jiayuguan pass. As a frontier fortress of ancient China, in Ming and Qing Dynasties, Jiayuguan was one of the most important strategic fortifications. So, the opening and closing of the Jiayuguan gate must obey the strictest rules made by Ming and Qing governments. In ceremony, all officials, soldiers and business men attended are wearing historical clothing. The ritual procedure is performed as followings:
1. Announce the beginning of the ceremony by setting off fireworks.
2. Unlocking the door of Jiayuguan Gate and then pushing the door open.
3. A courtier declares the rescript.
4. Officials check the passengers’ passports and identify their identities.
5. Get out of Jiayuguan by archaized wagons or camels.
6. Dunhuang ancient dances, Qinqiang songs, peace drums performance and other local and historical performances are showed in the Jiayuguan city.
7. Toward the picture of ZhuYuanzhang, the teams bid farewell to the gate of Jiayuguan and go on travel westward.
Through this ceremony, spectators can have a clearer understanding on the contacts and economic and cultural exchanges of Jiayuguan pass in ancient times.
