Introduction of the scenic spot

Saint Appearance Temple Tower is the oldest tower in Gansu province, and it is a national cultural relic. In appearance, it is similar with the Small Wild Goose Tower in Xi’an.

Saint Appearance Temple, established in Baoding First Year of North Zhou (561 AD), was first named Lucky Apperance Temple. In Taiyan First Year of North Wei (435AD), Liu Sake, a Danyang Shaman, “will go to Tianzhu (ancient India) to visit the Buddha relic and worshiped to the north here, his disciples felt surprised and asked for the reason……” Liu Sake’s prediction is as follows: Yugu Mountain will be broken in the future, there will appear a saint appearance which will be complete when the world is in peace and headless when the world is in chaos. For this, there are frescoes in the 231st hole of Tunhuang Mogao Grottoes: one is the lucky appearance of Buddha and the other is the two frescoes existing in the saint grotto. When it came to Zhengguang Third Year of Wei (522AD), one day, after sudden thunder, the mountain clasped and the ground broke and the precious stature of Buddha appeared, headless. When Suiyang Emperor (king of Sui Dynasty) was on his tour of inspection westward, he arrived at this temple and renamed it as “Telepathy Temple”. Zhenguan Tenth year of Tang Dynasty (636AD), Xuanzang stayed in the temple for a while on his way back from India after the Sutra searching and said that the temple had a lot of pilgrims with more than one thousand monks. It was renamed as Saint Appearance Temple and remained like that till now. And Back Great Temple is the popular name. It was composed of three main halls with five matching halls for west and east halls respectively. The gateway is opened to the south and on the west is the monk accommodation. It was destroyed in 1953. Built on the place for Saint Appearance Temple Site, Saint Appearance Temple Tower is the oldest tower building in Yongchang and even the whole province. The tower is 16.2 meters in length with seven levels. It is hollow inside and built in brick structure. There was once wood ladder inside for walking but all of it was destroyed in the fire.
