A Brief Introduction to Qingyang

Situated at the junction of Shaanxi province, Gansu province and Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region in the vast land of Northwestern China, Qingyang is a mysterious land. The landscape of Qiyang is unique there are mountains, flat lands, terraced fields, valleys, tableland and ridges. There are totally 12 terraced rice fields that have exceeded 100,000 mu (Chinese unit of area and one mu is 1/15 of a hectare). These fields occupy an area of 3,820,000 mu. The Dongzhi Terraced Rice Field with an area of 13627 mu is a vast expanse of cultivated land which stretches as far as the eye can see. Moreover, the Dongzhi Terraced Rice Field can be the world largest loess terraced field in terms of the area it occupies, the thickness and the completeness. The secondary forest on Ziwu Mountain with an area of more than 4,000,000 mu is the largest water conservation forest with the finest vegetation on the loess plateau and is often called a “Natural Reservoir”.

Qingyang boasts radiant historical treasures, for instance, the world famous fossils of “Huanjiang Pterosaur” and “Huang River Ancient Elephant” were both excavated in the Malian River Basin within Qiyang; the first piece of stone tools that marked the initiation of Chinese Paleolithic archaeology was unearthed at Zhaojiacha in Huachi county; there are also Yangshao and Qijia cultural relics from the Neolithic age and historic buildings, stone carvings, tombs, fossils, etc. from all dynasties through Chinese History , which amounts to as many as 1,000 spots.

The Great Wall of Qin state at the Warring States period stretches across 3 counties, namely Zhenyuan, Huan Xian and Huachi. The ancient “highway” Qinzhidao goes along the Ziwu Mountain and through the following four counties, Zhengning, Ningxian, Heshui and Huachi. The North Grotto Temple, built in the Northern Wei Dynasty is one of the four great grottoes in Gansu province. There are celebrities coming forth in great number in history, for instance, the thinker Wang Fu in the Eastern Han Dynasty, the scholar Fu Xuan in the Western Jin Dynasty and the litterateur Li Mengyang in the Ming Dynasty. They all contributed quite a lot to the Chinese thoughts and culture.
