Brief introduction
Nanguo Temple, also called Miaosheng Yard, faces north and is made up of threes temple compounds from west to east: West Compound, the Middle Compound and the East Compound.
As the main compound in Nanguo Temple, the West Compound mainly includes the Gate of the temple, the bell tower and the drum tower, Heavenly King Hall, Hall of Sakyamuni, the two matching halls in the east and in the west, the two Buddhist temple halls in the east and in the west and the Recumbent Buddha (statue of Buddha in a lying position) Hall. The huge straight Chinese Scholar tree (planted in Tang Dynasty) in front of the temple gate and the “Ancient Cypress” stretching out of the Hall of Sakyamuni are called the “two rare treasures” in the temple.
The East Buddhist Temple Hall is called the temple of Dufu, a famous poet in Tang Dynasty. There are the statues of Dufu and his two sons in the East Compound. The West Buddhist Temple serves as the reception center and the office of Nanguo Temple. Next to the West Buddhist Temple is a recumbent Buddha Hall, where is a lying statue of Buddha carved out of Burmese jade. There used to be a seven-storied sarira dagoba (the place to deposit the relics left after the cremation of the Buddha or a saintly monk) in the Recumbent Buddha Hall.
The Middle Compound includes Guanyu Temple (Guan was a general in Three Kindoms. He has been worshiped by Chinese people, especially the Buddhists and Taoists), the Chinese Rose Garden, the Miniature Garden and the flower shelf passage.
In the East Compound are the famous Beiliu (flowing north) Spring and the newly built “Ermiao Xuan” Corridor of poem steles and the Plum Garden. To the northwest of Nanguo Temple is a Memorial Pavilion built to memorize Deng BaoShan, 1896-1968, a general who was born in Tianshui City). Deng’s figure and life stories are on exhibition there.
To the east of Nanguo Temple is a high cliff, where a sight-viewing pavilion is built for tourists to have a look of the whole Tianshui City. In addition, there is a large natural white poplar forest on the slope behind Nanguo Temple. It is also a magnificent scene that adds to the attraction of the temple.
