Wuwei, called Liangzhou in ancient times, is located at the eastern part of Gansu Province. The Wuwei means powerful army in Chinese. During the West Han Dynasty when General Huo Qubin was sent by Emperor Wu in 121 BC to drive the invading Xiongnu tribe out of the region. The emperor name the region" Wuwei" in praise the general's great victory.
Lying approximately halfway between Lanzhou to the east and Zhangye to the west, Wuwei is a famous historical cultural city and opening city. Presently it governs Liangzhou District, Minqin County, Gulang County and Tianzhu Tibetan Autonomous County. In the region inhabit 38 ethnic groups, mainly the Han, Tibetan, Hui, Mongolian and so on.
