The history of Foshan paper cutting dates back to the Song Dynasty (960-1234), prospered in the Ming (1364-1683) and the Qing (1644-1912) dynasties. From the Ming Dynasty, Foshan paper cutting was produced and sold in batches to all over the country and Southeast Asian countries.

There are seven categories for Foshan paper cutting, namely bronze lining, paper lining, bronze writing, silver writing, wood carving chromatography, bronze chiseling and pure color according to the making materials and methods.

In ancient times, paper cutting is mainly used in festive occasions like traditional festival, sacrifices and weddings. It is also used in the design of embroidery and carving patterns, production trademark and so on. Nowadays, with the development of the society, the traditional spirit of Foshan paper cutting has been well preserved, and it has also carried out innovations, which enable the art to be used in a more extensive areas.
