Shamian Island has preserved the relatively intact European look of the British and French Concessions of the 19th century. It is a famous exotic scenic area and a historical and cultural protection zone in Guangzhou .

Overview

Shamian Island is a famous tourist area of Guangzhou for sightseeing and entertainment, and is also the seat of White Swan Hotel (the first five-star hotel in China). The island covers a small area of 0.3 square kilometers. It is surrounded by water on four sides, and on the island there are exuberant trees, blooming flowers and birds singing all year round, creating an elegant and tranquil atmosphere for the island. There are about 150 buildings of European style on Shamian Island. Beofre the founding of the People’s Republic of China, Shamian Island was occupied for a long time by countries like Britain and France; therefore the buildings there are mostly of European style. Catholic Church of the French concession, Christian church of the British concession, former HSBC ( Hong Kong and Shang Hai Banking Corporation) of Britain, former British Consulate and former French Consulate all are still standing on Shamian Island. The overall unique architectural environment of the island is preserved relatively intact.

With only 900 meters long from east to west and 300 meters wide from north to south, Shamian Island is suitable for a leisurely stroll. Walking on the pedestrian pavements, visitors can view the elegant and unique buildings, shop for souvenirs at chic boutiques, have a taste of coffee at a quiet coffee shop, or enjoy some authentic foods at restaurants. Shamian Islands provides a unique place for relaxing. During important festivals, there will be firework display parties at the White Swan Pond opposite to Shamian Island.

You can take Bus 823 at Guangzhou Railway Station to Shamian Island. You can also take Subway Line 1, and get off at Huang Sha Station (Exit D). Bus 208 can also take you to Shamian Island (at City Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine). Or, you can take a taxi to Shamian Island (5.9 kilometers), costing about 18 RMB.
