In history, Guangdong was not subjected to large-sclae of development until Song dynasty. In Ming dynasty, the level of productive forces has caught up with the Yangtze valley and the Yellow River Basin. Guangdong has become an economically developed area in China.
Although Guangdong was exploited later, the production of commodity appeared earlier. According to the recorded history, in the South and North dynasty of the 6th century Guangdong's sugarcane has been divided into two types. One is suitable for producing sugar; the other is taken as a kind of fruit. The first can be extracted juice and made into black sugar. After the Opium War, under the influence of the western capital and technology, Guangzhou set up a gun factory(formally the Hanyang military factory)in the fifth year of Tongzhi, Qing dynasty (1866). In 1873, the Changlong Silk Reeled Factory in Nanhe, the first national industry, was established. Guangdong is one of the birthplaces of China's modern industry and national industry.
Since Guangdong has opened up to the world, a number of big changes happened in Guangdong. After the total value of retail sales of consumer goods forged into first place in China in 1984, the total value of exports, use of foreign funds,fixed assets, Gross domestic product(GDP) and local taxation rank the first among all provinces, cities and autonomous regions of China. The cultural and ethical progress and all social projects have made outstanding achievements. Guangdong played an important role in China modern history .Many historical events,such as the Opium War, the TaiPing Rebellion, the Northern Expedition Army War, the Reform Movement of 1898, the Revolution of 1911, the Northern Expedition Army War, the Shenggang Strike, the Guangzhou Uprising etc. all happened here. During the nearly 100 years' revolution, a lot of Chinese outstanding representatives and leading spirits of democratic revolutions, such as Hongxiuquan, Kangyouwei, Liangqichao, Sunzhongshan etc. and a group of proletarian revolutionaries like Yiejianying emerged in Guanddong. Many important activities like the First Cooperation between Kuomintang and Communist Party were held here. These left many unforgettable historical relics.
