Originated from Late Ming Dynasty and culminated at the beginning of 20th century, Kaiping Diaolou (Diaolou is built in ancient China for people to defend against enemies and store things.) has become an outstanding characteristic in folk architecture of Kaiping (hometown of overseas Chinese in Guangdong). As groups of local buildings, Kaiping Diaolou is the reflection of local culture on buildings with the number of 3000 at best and 1800 at present. Kaiping Diaolou enjoys the reputation of “exceptional example as the reflection of local culture of overseas Chinese” and “shocking Architectural Corridor"

With the number ranging from two or three to more than ten, Diaolou in Kaiping could be found everywhere, which stenches for miles magnificently. As the witness of development of politics, economy and culture of Kaiping, Diaolou reflects the period when the people in Kaiping work hard and struggle against the enemies, and is a vivid museum of architectures in recent time.

Diaolou is mainly used for keeping thieves and flood away and inhabiting, with decoration on top as the most special thing of Diaolou, which combines the architectural styles of resident country of overseas Chinese and Chinese building tradition together. There are more than 10 types of styles of it, including typical Chinese style, Landscape style blending the east and the west, villa style, Ancient Roman style, Middle East style, American style, British style, German Fortresses style and Church style. The present Diaolou in Kaiping can be classified by the making materials like mud, blue brick and steel and concrete. As a wonder in Chinese rural architecture history which reflects the advancing and creativity of overseas Chinese’ culture, Diaolou is famous for combining arts of buildings of different countries and thus be called Museum of Architectures. Its artistic and scientific value is recognizing by the world gradually.

As a record of the family of overseas Chinese, Kaiping Diaolou nowadays is still connecting the local tradition and the custom which is brought to other places in the world. During that time, the hosts of these Diaolous came here and made the wonderland by themselves, let alone what happens outside. Peace and ease is the theme here.
