The introduction of the Universiade
The Universiade is a comprehensive games organized by the International University Sports Association. The word “Universiade” is a proper noun made of “University” and “Olympiad”, which specifically refers to the worldwide Olympic Games that are held only for the undergraduates. The Universiade, generally known as “small Olympic Games”, was first held in 1959 and held every two years. The Universiade is the world’s large-scale integrated Games second only to the Olympic Games, receiving a great deal of attention from every country in the world and attracting numerous outstanding athletes of the world to participate in the game. And many world records have been broken during the summer universiades. According to the rule, only undergraduates and graduates who have graduated no more than two years, aging from 17 to 28, can participate in this world's largest integrated Games.
The Universiade is composed of three events, including the Summer Universiade, the Winter Universiade and the World University Championships. The Universiade mainly consists of 9 compulsory sports, including athletics, basketball, fencing, gymnastics, swimming, diving, water polo, tennis, volleyball. Besides, the host country has the opportunity to add one more sports event.
The introduction of the 26th summer Universiade
The Universiade had been held for 25 times from 1959 up to 2009. In January 2007, Shenzhen beat four other candidate cities, Kaohsiung of Chinese Taipei, Poznan of Poland, Kazan of Russia and Murcia of Spain and won the bidding of hosting the 2011 summer Universiade. The 26th summer Universiade (more about the news) will be held in Shenzhen City of Guangdong Province from August 12th to 23rd, 2011, which is the second summer Universiade held in China and the highest-level global sports event in Shenzhen . By then, there will be 15,000 excellent university athletes, about 10, 000 officials, coaches, referees and reporters and millions of audience from over 180 countries in the world.
In order to host a successful summer Universiade, more than 30 new venues will be built and 50 old venues will be renovated. The center of the 26th summer Universiade, which is the main venue of the Universiade, is located in the northeast of Shenzhen City and the west district of Longgang Town, 15 kilometers away from the center of the city. The 26th summer Universiade, giving prominence to the concept of “innovation and future” and centered on “the city of youth” and “the harmonious grand gathering”, tries to work a miracle of the summer Universiade and contributes to the sports of undergraduates at home and abroad.
There will be 24 sports events in the 26th summer Universiade, including basketball, football, track and field, fencing, gymnastics, swimming, diving and the like. Besides, during the 26th summer Universiade, there will be large-scale events, including the opening ceremony, the closing ceremony, the torch relay, the collection of emblem, the 2011 Universiade Cultural Festival and various large-scale cultural activities.
