View 12 photos, or upload your photo.

Longji Terraced Fields is in the Heping town in Longsheng, a 2 hours drive from Guilin . The terraced rice fields, like ladders, wind from the bottom of the mountain to the top. The elevation varies from 380 meters to 880 meters with a drop of 500 meters. First built during the Yuan Dynasty, these rice fields were built with the determination, sweat and blood of generations of people. It is a testimony to the ingenuity of agriculture in mountainous areas. These fields are often belt-shaped, narrow and long, most of which are only wide enough for two rows of crops. The largest patch is only one Mu. There are about 66 square kilometers of terraced fields in southeast Longsheng.

People living in this region are mainly Zhuang minority. Their villages dot the rolling terraced fields. The two most visited villages are Huangluo Yao Village and Yinshui Dong Village.

Huangluoyao Village:This village is well known to the world because the women who live here have unusually long hair; some so long that they touch the ground. This fact has been recorded by the Guinness General Headquarters. The reason why their hair can grow so long remains unknown. Some of these women have travelled outside their villages to show off their beautiful hair. On sunny days, they can be seen in groups of two or three at the bank of the Jinjiang River, washing their hair. This makes for an interesting folk picture.

Yinshui Tong Village:This Dong ethnic village lies in a mountain valley. The village has a long history dating back to the ancient Tang Dynasty over 1,000 years ago. Early in the Tang Dynasty, the Wu family of Tong nationality moved to Longsheng and settled here. After generations, the village has grown. Many, many people have settled here and enjoy happy and carefree lives. At the rear of the village is a temple frequented by many worshippers. The village is filled with wooden houses.

We took a bus leaving Guilin at 8 p.m. and more than two hours later reached Longji Terrace. It is the most majestic man-made natural scenic wonder I have ever seen. The drop of 800 meters, clouds-wrapping mountain tops and cheerfully flowing streams, make the Longji Terraces majestic and charming. Interestingly, the largest plots of the terrace is less than one Mu (1/15 hectare), and most of them just enough for two rows of seedlings. At that moment, the sky was just clear up after a rain over the night. The fields were filled with rainwater, which look like glittering glasses overlapped each other lying tier upon tier. I was deeply touched by such a fascinating scene. We walked on an ancient flagging, which was the only route connecting the Zhuang people living in Ping’ an village (the main village on Longji) and the outside world. The fresh air, mild mountain wind and birds’ singing accompanied us all the way with the delicate breath of the mixture of leaves, grasses and earth blowing on our face. It was so quiet here that we could even hear our breath and footfall. Going ahead, we saw three old cattle leisurely lying down on the plot of the terraces. Here, without telegraph pole, cistern or anything made of reinforced concrete, is an enchanted idyllic place.

The area can only be accesible iva a small, winding road. I was trapped in a heavy traffic congestion on the way from Longsheng to the area last National Holiday.

The peacefulness here is surreal. The sounds of crickets filled the night air, and the peaceful streams flow everywhere.

Very great natural scenery. The fields wind from the mountain base to the top like ladders. Please be informed in advance, there are two places that you can watch the terraced fields: one is Ping'an and the other is Dazhai. There are seperate buses from the Longsheng town to Ping'an and Dazhai. Ping'an is more touristy but sophisticated in tourist receptions with more hotels, restaurants. Dazhai is less visited than Ping'an but in peak travel season such as the Chinese National Holiday, Chinese New Year Holiday, the town is always short of beds. I visited Dazhai this National Holiday and came across some travelers arrived late had trouble to find a place to stay.
