Temple of the Six Banyan Trees, also known as Jinghui Temple, is a famous time-honored temple in Guangzhou, boasting towering pagodas and an abundance of cultural relics. It was ranked as top 10 tourist attraction of Guangzhou in 1997, and it’s also regarded as one of the top 4 Buddhist temples in Guangzhou, together with Guangxiao temple, Hualin temple and Haidong temple. Temple of the Six Banyan Trees was firstly built in the year 537 and was rebuilt in the year 989.
Origin of the Present Name
The temple was once named Changshou Temple and Jinghui Temple before. The present name was given by the great poet Su Dongpo who was a renowned poet and made great contributions to the literature in the Northern Song Dynasty. He used to pay a visit to the temple when he noticed six conspicuous and alive banyan trees which impressed him a lot. Afterwards, Su Dongpo was asked to give a name for this temple. Of course, he called it Temple of the Six Banyan Trees.
What to See in the Temple
In the temple, there is a famous pagoda named Qianfo (thousand Buddha), which is gorgeous and multicolored. It’s also called “Flower Pagoda”. The 57-meter-tall pagoda is a famous ancient high-rise building in Guangzhou. On the top of the pagoda, you can overlook the scenery of the whole city.
To the east of the pagoda, there is a Maitreya Hall, Hall of Heavenly Kings and Weituo Hall. To the west of the pagoda, it’s a solemn and magnificent Great Buddha’s Hall where three big Buddhist Statues made of yellow brass are worshipped. The three Buddhist Statues can date back to Emperor Kangxi period with the height of 6 meters and weight of 10 tons, which have been the largest ancient bronze statues in Guangdong Province.
In the temple, there is also a garden called Rongyin garden where you can see Six Ancestor Hall, the Hall of Avalokitesvara Buddhisatva, abstinence hall and Merit Hall. In the Six Ancestor Hall, you can see a bronze statue of the 6th Zen Buddhism patriarch named Huineng with the height of 1.8 meters and weight of 1 ton, which looks vivid and solemn.
