Traveling by train is certainly achievable and can be a great way to get to know the people, the culture and to see the country side at a more leisurely pace. It is also a much cheaper means of transport that traveling by air.

Guilin is easily reached by train travel. There are trains from/to Beijing, Shanghai, hangzhou, Suzhou, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Xian, Kunming and many other Chinese cities(Please go to our China train search page if you want search trains from/to Guilin).

There are two railway stations in Guilin-one at the north of the city and the other at the city center. The northern one has very little use and most of the trains depart from/stop at the Guilin South Railway Station(桂林南站) at the south end of Zhongshan Road(zhongshan lu). Outside the South Railway is a parking lot where taxies are wating and go further is a public bus stop where numerous bus lines stop.

Guilin Railway Stations

Brief Introduction:

There are two railway stations in Guilin: Guilin Railway Station ( also called Guilin South Railway Station) and Guilin North Railway Station. Among the two, Guilin Railway Station is larger and is more used by travelers.

South Railway Station(Guilin Railway Station)

Location: It is located at Zhongshan South Road (Zhongshan Nan Lu) in Xiangshan District, close to the bus station.

Guilin Railway Station was built in 1938 and expanded in 2005, after which its capacity has been largely increased. Currently, it can host up to 1,5000 passengers. There are trains from Guilin Railway Station to the major cities in China which includes Beijing, Shanghai, Xi’an, Guangzhou, Nanjing and Hangzhou. There aren’t direct trains to the areas father north Beijing such as Northeast China (Heilongjiang, Changchun and Jilin provinces). Likewise, direct train to Northwest China (except for Xi’an) is not available. Travelers who want to travel to these regions need to change trains in either Beijing or Zhengzhou.

Guilin South Railway Station is conveniently located in the city center, at the main street of Guilin (zhongshan Road). Around the station, there are plenty of budget hotels. The best hotel close to the Railway Station is Guilin Osmanthus Hotel, which is a three-star hotel.

It is a very big garden, takes a long time to visit all the places. You’d better get a map and decide where to go and see in advance. There is the prayer hall where ancient emperors prayed for harvests, the round square where ancient emperors used to hold praying ceremonies, all are world heritages. What attracted most about the Temple of Heaven is that every Monday morning, many local Chinese people would gather here and do some morning exercises. Some play Taichi, some sing folk songs, and some dance waltz.

The Temple of Heaven with the surrounding park is one of the largest structures in Beijing. So it helps to know what you are looking for, unless you want to walk all day. Enter through the northern or the eastern gate, and go to the main temple (you’ll see it), and then continue southward until you reach the southern gate. If you have time and energy left you can also have a look at the fasting palace in the west. If you go there before 9 in the morning the Temple of Heaven park is a good place to go if you want to see local Beijingers doing their morning exercises and tai chi.

The architectural feature of this building complex is imposing and the associated stories are very interesting.
