Anshun Folk Drama, Anshun

Anshun Folk Drama, which is called “Anshun Dixi” by the local citizens in Anshun, is unique to Tunbao people. The folk drama is performed by masked performers, all of whom are farmers. Anshun Folk Drama is usually performed in villages and there is usually one drama in one village with more than 20 performers. The masked performers with the blue scarves on their heads and swords and spears in their hands sing and dance leisurely. With another name of “perform for the Spring Festival”, Anshun Folk Drama is usually performed during the period of the Spring Festival, lasting for about twenty days. Those farmers hope to have a good harvest and good weather for the crops next year. And the local people take the folk drama as the symbol of the old year out and the New Year in and a way to expel evil spirits and pursue good fortune.

The whole performance is composed of opening the gate of good luck, the ritual before the folk drama, the dance of sorcerers and the ritual after the drama. “The dance of Sorcerers” is composed of three parts, including “the holding of the court by the King”, “declaring wars”, “sending the army” and “going back to the court”. Theses activities mostly aim to bring wealth, and happiness, attracting a great number of people standing around watching, hoping to get good fortune in the following year.
