Qiang Huapao is a traditional game prevalent in Zhuang ethnic minority and Dong ethnic minority of Guizhou province and Guangxi province. Huapao is a kind of ball resembling rugby wrapped with red and green cloth. Some of them are made by rubber, and some are made by bamboo slips. Twenty competitors are divided into two teams and each team has a basket in their goal-area respectively as their goal. Qiang Huapao means competitors challenge for the ball (Huapao) and try to put it in the opponents’ basket.
It is held during every Spring Festival and some other grand festivals, especially after the harvest. Dong ethnic people in Liping County and Congjiang county of Kaili are in full costume at that day and get together at the venue of the game. Some of them are to participate in the game; some are to cheer up the competitors; and some girls are to find their potential boyfriends.
The game lasts for fifty minutes with ten minutes half time. The intense competition during the game wins it a title as the Oriental Rugby.
