Haikou is a tropical city with rich resources and a history of more than a thousand years as a port. It was made the provincial capital when Hainan province was created in 1988.
The city is located at the north end of Hainan Island. The land is mostly flat and the longest river of Hainan Island, the Nandu River, runs through the city winding to the north. The area is generally terraces and plains with an average altitude of no more than 100 meters.
The Hainan Strait to the north of the city separates the island from Guangdong province. There is about 131 kilometers of coastline in the city, which covers an area of 830 square kilometers.
