The land transportation of Hainan is mainly highway with the traffic mileage of over 17,000 kilometers. There are trunk roads direct to many ports, cities and counties and branch roads extending to 318 villages and towns as well as tourist attractions, which form a criss-cross transport network around the island extending in all directions.
The 223 national highway, 224 national highway and 225 national highway are the main highway lines of Hainan. Haikou City is 300 kilometers from Sanya City and it takes 3.5 hours from Sanya to Haikou by highway. Traveling from Sanya to Haikou, you can take a bus from Sanya bus terminal at Jiefang Road of Sanya.
The main railways of Hainan are Hainan Xihuan Railway which came into service in 2004 and Hainan Donghuan High Speed Railway. At present, there are 5 trains connecting Hainan Island with other provinces, which include Haikou to Xi’an, Haikou to Shanghai South, Sanya to Beijing West, Haikou to Chengdu East and Haikou to Changsha.
Ocean shipping is a major and indispensable means of transportation in Hainan. At present, Hainan Province has 68 natural harbors and 24 ports that have been opened up.
The largest ports include Haikou, Sanya, Basuo and Yangpu ports, and the other main ports include Qinglan, Puqian, Xincun, Bo’ao and Xinying ports. Haikou and Sanya ports connect the world’s 24 countries and regions with Hainan Island, and provide great convenience for tourists from Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan and other countries.
The air traffic develops extraordinarily rapidly in Hainan Province. There are 2 major airports, including Haikou Meilan Airport (came into service in 1999) in the north and Sanya Phoenix International Airport (came into service in 1994) in the south.
The two airports provide more than 200 flights from Hainan to over 90 cities and regions at home and abroad, including Beijing, Shanghai, Tianjin, Guangzhou, Shenyang, Taiyuan, Xi’an, Changchun, Harbin, Dalian, Jinan, Qingdao, Yantai, Nanjing, Hefei, Hangzhou, Ningbo, Fuzhou, Xiamen, Hohhot, Baotou, Erdos, Wenzhou, Chengdu, Chongqing, Kunming, Guiyang, Guilin, Wuhan, Zhengzhou, Changsha, Shenzhen, Shantou, Shijiazhuang, Xuzhou, Nanchang, Yinchuan, Nanning, Urumchi, Zhanjiang, Beihai, Zhuhai, Changzhou, Lanzhou, Luoyang, Hong Kong, Taipei, Singapore, Bangkok, Seoul, Moscow, Haishenwai and Novosibirsk.
Besides, there are also small-sized airliners for passenger transport. It takes about 30 minutes and costs about 15 yuan by airport bus between downtown Haikou and Haikou Meilan Airport. It takes 30 minuets and costs 15 yuan by airport bus between downtown Sanya and Sanya Phoenix International Airport.
