Su Causeway

Last updated by vincentg1991 at 2014/7/16

Su Causeway is located in the charming West Lake scenic area. It is an achievement of Su Dongpo when he was a governor in Hangzhou in Southern Song Dynasty. He found the lake surface was dried up, so he petitioned to dig the lake in order to provide water to fish-raising, drinking, irrigation and transport. In memory of the great politician and poetry, people named it Su Causeway.

Spring Dawn at Su Causeway is the first site in West Lake scenic area for visitors to see. There are six arched stone bridges spanning the lake: Ripples Reflection Bridge, Locking Waves Bridge, Viewing Hill Bridge, Suppressing Dike Bridge, Eastern Lakeside Bridge, and Crossing Rainbow Bridge.

Enjoying a well-known reputation of the main scene of the Ten Scenes in West Lake, Spring Dawn at Su Causeway is a must-see for visitors to explore the grace of West Lake and enjoy the romantic Hangzhou travel.

What to Do

Strolling and Cycling

Travelers strolling along the Su Causeway will feel like walking in a picture. The scene “Spring Dawn at Su Causeway” also called “Misty Willows on the Sides of the Six Bridges”. Walking in the gorgeous and very picturesque place, travelers will see all the six arch bridges.

The way along the road is landscaped with trees and flowers. Su causeway is nearly an hours’ walk. It is comfortable to sit on the stone bench by the lake. The stone bench is so near the lake that travelers can stretch their legs into the cool water to take a break. It is better to walk on weekday morning or evening, because there will be a lot of people at weekend.

When traveling in spring, travelers can appreciate the misty and green willows. There is a new photo opportunity all the time.

Su Causeway is a 2, 800 m length way. Cycling is also a good choice to enjoy the charming sight of West Lake.

The Hangzhou Su Dongpo Memorial Hall

When it comes to the West Lake, the graceful place is always linked with great literature master Su Dongpo. Near the south end of Su Causeway, there locates the Hangzhou Su Dongpo Memorial Hall. Visitors can see Su’s masterpieces of poems, copies of calligraphy and paintings displayed in the hall.

Dongpo Pork

Another thing named after Su Dongpo is the delicious food, Dongpo Pork. Dongpo Pork is the trademark dish in Hangzhou. The pork is quite tender, so eaters can pry it into small pieces easily. It is a lot of fat, but after a long time cooking, it results in its greasiness.
