To adopt “nifanmingjiao way” (meaning to cast the mud model of lion), the way to cast iron lion is to use the whole mud model as core and cast it section after section. Based on the casting skill with hand dating back to over a thousand years ago, casting such an enormous monster reveals eminent wisdom and super skills of craftsman in that time, no matter its molding, smelting or casting scale.

As a key cultural preservation approved primarily by the state council, iron lion is 6.1 meters long, 5.48 meters high, 3 meters broad, wearing zhangni(mad for avoiding dust), shouldering a huge basin, with wave-like hair, with head holding high, eyes glaring, mouth broadly opening and roaring. Thus, it is also called “zhenhaihou” (meaning the roar is so powerful that the sea can be suppressed), whose body is strong with four limbs spreading, which looks as if it suddenly stops when walking quickly, with its gesture cast grandly and vividly. It is recorded that iron lion was cast in the 3rd year of Guangshun in Five Dynasties (953 AD) with a history of more than a thousand years. It is one of the craft treasures in ancient China, although it was weathered and eroded, there are still clear characters of “the king of lion” under the neck.
