Mengjiangnu Temple is situated on the Phoenix Mountain about 6 km east of the Shanhai Guan city, and it is also called the Vestal Virgin Temple. It is said that it was began to be built before Song Dynasty. The story of Mengjiangnu is one of the four greatest legends of China, the later generations admire the loyalty of Mengjiangnu, and respect her faithfulness and staunchness, so they built this temple in commemoration of her story. The existing temple is the embodiment of the architectural style of Ming Dynasty. In front of the temple, they built 108 steps of pedestrian flagstones conforming to the terrain the mountain, symbolizing the hardships and obstacles on the way of Mengjiangnu’s journey to look for her husband. When you ascend step by step to the mountain gate with the stele “Zhen Nv Ci” hung upon, coming to the front hall through the gate, you will see the famous couplet renowned throughout the country hung on the columns, the first line reads “Hai shui chao zhao zhao chao zhao chao zhao luo”, and the second line reads “Fu yun zhang chang chang zhang chang zhang chang xiao”. There are many ways of parsing in reading this couplet. Weighing every word carefully, you will find it is full of humor and wit.
A mud statue of Meng Jiangnu is placed in the middle of the hall. She is dressed in simple costumes and light face painting with worried look on her face and endless grief and complaints in her eyes, making you feel the temporal dismal and lonely mind of Meng Jiangnu on her way to look for her husband from a distance of thousands of miles away. In Sept. 1992, the borough government of Shanhai Guann built a large culture garden---Meng Jiangnu Garden to the north side of Meng Jiangnu Temple on the basis of the legend of Meng Jiangnu. The garden takes the legend of “Jiangnu looking for her husband from thousands of miles away and weeping the Great Wall to collapse” as the central line. You will have a deeper and more profound understanding of this moving love story after you have viewed the 20 scenes such as “making winter clothing at night, millions of young men building the Great Wall, the Waiting for the husband concave rock, and weeping the Great Wall to collapse”.
Looking around the Mengjiangnu Temple, you will have a real experience of the mind that “I don’t know where to send my condolences to your loyal soul, only your lonely tomb will remain forever to tell the beautiful story to later generations”; visiting the Meng Jiangnu garden, you will be fully informed with the sad and sorrowful story of Meng Jiangnu looking for her husband from thousands of miles away and sweeping the Great Wall to break down. To the south of Meng Jiangnu garden, there is a rock cavity, which is said to secretly lead to Bo Hai, and is named “The eye of the Sea”. Many curious tourists have come in front of the cavity to listen carefully and respectfully in the hope of listening to the sound of sea waves and billows. From 28 May to 30 May every year, the Meng Jiangnu temple fair will be held in this area, during which you can take part in rich and colorful interesting folk art activities, such as the big Yangge, the northeast folk song and dance by two people, and the kid shows, etc.
