The Great Wall appears like a huge dragon with its head ducking deep into Bo Hai to paddle in the water and frolic among the waves, so the place is popularly called “Old Dragon Head”. It is located in the area 5 km south of the Shanhai Guang city, which is one of the most essential parts in the military safety defense system of the Ming Great Wall, and one of the most important scenic spots in Shanhai Pass Scenic Area.

Old Dragon Head reaches deep in the sea in the shape of a peninsula. The body of the wall naturally bends and extends along the coastline. It is built with blocks, and is composed of seven parts, namely, Joining the Sea Block city, the Sea God Temple, Jinglu Platform, South Sea Exit, Chenghai Pavilion, Ninghai city and Seashore Great Wall. Among these parts, Joining the sea block city is said to be built by the famous Anti-Japan General Qi Jiguang of Ming Dynasty, which is as high as about thirty foot. Half of the wall was under sea level and collapsed in later years, only the granite foundation stones can still be seen immerged in the sea water; the Chenghai Pavilion is the highest point of the Old Dragon Head, an ideal place to appreciate the vastness and grandness of the sea. In Qing Dynasty, the emperor Kangxi and Qianlong had been to this pavilion for many times when they return back to Mukden (present Shenyang) to worship their ancestors. Looking into the distance from the pavilion, the emperors had created many beautiful poems, and the stele of “Chenghai Lou” is the autograph of emperor Qianlong of Qing Dynasty. Besides, there are many stelae embedded on the east and west walls, on which poems produced by emperors of Qing Dynasty and other literary figures and men of letters were engraved. The body of the pavilion is an entirely wood structure, within which the cultural relics unearthed in the Old Dragon Head and the epigraphs written by some leaders of the party and the state after the establishment of the country are displayed.

After the year 1840, warships of western super imperial countries like Britain and France had cruised here for many times, and occupied Shanhai Guan by force in 1900. They bombed the Old Dragon Head with cannons, burned down the Chenghai Pavilion, and then carved up and occupied the area according to their respective orbit, and during this period they had committed severe destruction on the Old Dragon Head. After the establishment of the People’s Republic of China, since the year 1985, the central government had repaired the Old Dragon Head which had lasted for about 8 years, thus making it shoulder a new historic mission of the new era, i.e. the education of patriotism as it is showing afresh its original appearance to people of the world.
